Become the next generation of teachers with Melrose Learning Trust
Melrose Initial Teacher Training
Melrose Learning Trust is committed to developing and nurturing trainees and supporting teachers as they move through their career. We are dedicated to developing our own teachers from the early stages of their career within a trust that believes in ‘growing together in life in all its fullness’. We are very proud of the fact that Melrose Learning Trust benefits from having a strong team of highly experienced staff with expertise in both Initial Teacher Training and the induction of Early Career Teachers.
We work in partnership with Sunderland University to train the next generation of teachers within a school-based primary setting. Our school-based teacher training is an ideal route to gain the skills and qualifications you need to become a teacher, a one-year programme where you can make a difference from day one.
Trainee teachers are immersed in the school environment from the outset, meaning that you will ‘live and breathe’ real-life teaching from day one. Every trainee is carefully matched to a single class in a ‘host school’ where you work and train for most of the year, becoming a real and valued part of the school team. During the first half of the Spring Term, all trainees are given the opportunity to experience an alternate key stage in a different school, after which you return to your host school for the remainder of the programme.
Every trainee is linked with a trained school-based mentor who will oversee and monitor your development and act as your trainer within school for the year. As a trainee teacher you will work alongside your mentor to develop and support you in learning effective classroom strategies. Your mentor will provide you with high quality feedback and set you training targets to enable you to reflect on your learning and ensure you make progress, providing a truly personalised programme. Over the year, further responsibility and an increased percentage of teaching is gradually passed over to you as you gain in confidence and experience.
Additionally, you will have a university-based mentor who works closely with you and your school mentor. They will give further support and assess your progress towards the Foundational Concepts and finally, by the end of the course, Teachers’ Standards.

What to expect?
The majority of the autumn term is spent within your host school with weekly attendance at Sunderland University. During this term you will be supported to complete classroom-based tasks and begin to deliver lessons in accordance with your personalised targets. By the end of the Autumn term the expectation is that your teaching commitment will gradually build up to approximately 50% of the week.
The Spring term begins with an opportunity for you to experience a different school setting within Melrose Learning Trust or one of our partner schools. You will spend 5 weeks developing your classroom practice with pupils in a different key stage and learn from experienced teachers within that school. You will continue to regularly attend Sunderland University. By the end of the term, you will have returned to your host school and will begin your final teaching practice.
The Summer term sees the completion of your assessed teaching practice. At this stage, the expectation is that you will demonstrate that you can plan an appropriate sequence of work across the full range of the curriculum. You will build up to teaching 80% of the weekly timetable, including the preparation of teaching resources, engaging marking and feedback activities and fulfilling the main requirements of a classroom teacher. This will prepare you for entry into the profession as a qualified teacher.
Enrichment days are built into our core programme to further enhance your training, equipping you with a broader knowledge, skills and understanding to teach in a wide range of contexts.

What a wonderful, busy day Year 3 have had at Preston Park!
When they arrived, they headed straight to the learning area, in the museum, to find out who the Anglo-Saxons were and how long ago they lived. The children discovered that they lived in Britain after the Romans but they led very different lives. Did you know that many place names in our region originate from Anglo-Saxon times and 'Darlington' is one of them?
Being history detectives, the class enjoyed examining some interesting replicas of artefacts that would have used during this period of history and they would even have been buried with people back then. One of the objects that they looked at was a leather pouch that contained lots of glass beads, which may have been used to play games, so we played an Anglo-Saxon game called 'Nine Men's Morris' which was great fun. Then they created their own beautiful clay pots like some of the ones they saw on display.
After a lovely picnic lunch, the class explored the Victorian Street and enjoyed going into some of the buildings where they learned many interesting facts. Luckily, they all made it out of the police cell so they could spend some time in the fabulous park. What a treat at the end of a gorgeous day! ... See MoreSee Less

Today, Reception had an amazing time joining a live lesson with Greg Botrill to celebrate National Hairy Toe Day! 👣✨
The children got stuck into some fantastic creative activities—making their very own hairy toes and designing houses for them to live in. There were so many imaginative ideas, but our absolute favourite had to be the “Hairy-plane” 🚀—a brilliant invention to help the hairy toe escape the tiny monster!
Everyone had so much fun, with lots of laughter, creativity and brilliant ideas all round. What a fantastic experience for the class! 💛

Class Newsletters with curriculum information and dates for the Summer Term will be coming home with the children in the next few days, but I wanted to give you early notice of the dates for this year's Sports Days.
With the unpredictable nature of our weather, we are holding our Sports Days slightly earlier this year so that if we do have to postpone we have enough time to find an alternative date later in the term. Also, the weather in May is often lovely and not quite as hot as it can potentially get in June/July.
The dates are as follow:
Nursery: Tuesday 19th May 9.00am - parents and carers are invited to come in for a tea or coffee at 8.30am while the children get ready for their Sports Day which will run from 9.00am to approximately 9.45am.
Reception, Class One and Class Two: Tuesday 19th May from 1.30pm until hometime
Classes Three, Four, Five and Six: Wednesday 20th May from 1.30pm until hometime
More information will be sent home nearer the time, fingers crossed the weather is fine! ... See MoreSee Less
